Our MAINE KiwieMoon ! Dog-Friendly Stay in a Dog-Shaped State

JULY 2017:  KENNEBUNKPORT, PORTLAND
My husband and I got married on July 1, 2017.  We took a few days after our wedding to go on a road trip with our dog, Kiwie.  We wanted to spend as much time as possible with Kiwie, especially since she was diagnosed with heart disease earlier in the year.  We decided on MAINE and planned to spend our KIWIEMOON relaxing, sunbathing, eating lots of lobster and seafood, trying the local brews, and bringing Kiwie on dog-friendly outings !

Kiwie was so excited for our road trip !  She was all ready to go, seat-belted into her travel carrier with expanded alcove.  It’s about a 5 hour drive from New York City to Kennebunkport
Maine Kiwie.jpgWe arrived in the early evening and checked into the COLONY HOTEL.  The historic hotel is set on a hill and has amazing river views, a private beach, and a swimming pool.  Best of all, it’s super dog-friendly !  We booked the King room in the Galland House, which is 1 of only 2 houses that has rooms with a TV and AC

First thing on our agenda, seafood !  We walked over to MABELS LOBSTER CLAW and ordered New England Clam Chowder, Full Belly Clam Strips with homemade tartar sauce, a Lobster Roll, and a Crab Roll (best of the trip!) from the take-away window to bring back to the hotel

Since it was July 4th, we planned to watch the fireworks and the hotel is a prime viewing location.  We set-up our seafood picnic and a chilled bottle of wine at a spot on the hill overlooking the Kennebunk River  [TIP:  Bring-Your-Own Wine and bring a bedsheet to use as a picnic blanket]
Kiwie Wine
It was a clear beautiful evening with an amazing sunset  [TIP:  Maine gets chilly at night even in the summertime, so don’t forget a sweater or jacket]
Sunset
The surrounding towns all have their own firework shows so from our spot at the hotel, we had a great view of each town along the river  [TIP:  Don’t forget the bug spray]
Fireworks
After the fireworks, we went back to our room and turned in for the night.  Kiwie dug in her bed for a while and then fell fast asleep.  zZzzZz Snore !

We started the day with the included breakfast buffet at the PORCH DINING ROOM, which has a fantastic view overlooking the water.  The buffet had a good selection of hot foods and fruits, including local Maine blueberries.  Kiwie joined us and enjoyed her apple slices

After breakfast, we headed to the pool to catch a tan.  The view from the pool overlooks the private Colony Beach.  It was a perfect summer day with clear blue skies and a relaxing breeze.  It was Kiwie’s first time sunbathing by the pool and she even had her own lounge chair !  [TIP:  An umbrella can double as a doggie sun shade and for even more sun cover, drape a sarong over]

After the pool, we headed into Kennebunk to the COTTAGE BREEZE DAY SPA where I got an Arnica Body Melt back massage while my husband grabbed a Happy Hour beer on the outdoor patio at RYAN’S CORNER HOUSE IRISH PUB with Kiwie.  After my massage, we went to THE CLAM SHACK for an early dinner.  We got the famous Lobster Roll with whole claw pieces, Full Belly Clam Strips, a Crab Roll, and some local brews  [TIP:  Go during non-peak times for no wait]

After dinner, we walked around Dock Square in Kennebunkport.  We stopped by SCALAWAGS PET BOUTIQUE where we picked up Dog Treat Lobster Rolls for Kiwie.  Her first time eating lobster !  Next was AUNT MARIE’S for some Campfire S’mores ice cream.  Then we stopped by CANDYMAN for some homemade fudge.  We tried coconut, salted caramel (my fav !), blueberry, orange creamsicle, and cookies n’ cream

After breakfast, we headed to the pool for another day of sunbathing.  Kiwie had a good time as usual and she especially enjoyed the extra breeze that day.  After a few hours and a few local beers, we went back to our room to get ready for our afternoon scenic lobster boat cruise

We arrived at the dock in Kennebunk and picked up a late lunch of Lobster Rolls from THE PILOT HOUSE to bring aboard.  Then we boarded KYLIE’S CHANCE, a 65ft lobster boat, for the 1.5 hour cruise along the Kennebunk River.  Dogs are welcome !

We saw sea lions lying out on the rocks, passed by the Bush Family compound, and learned about lobstering.  The Captain even pulled up a lobster trap and took out a baby lobster

This was Kiwie’s first boat trip and also her first time meeting a lobster.  She had a blast !  By the time we anchored back at the dock, she was exhausted

After the cruise, we were able to catch Happy Hour at DAVID’S KPT.  We sat on the outdoor terrace overlooking the river.  We ordered Oysters, Clams, Mussels, and Gulf Shrimp Cocktail with honey cajun cocktail sauce.  The shrimp, especially with the sauce, was so good and at only $8.50, we had to get a second order

After Happy Hour, we picked up dinner at ALISSON’S RESTAURANT to take-away.  We ordered Full Belly Clam Strips and Lobster Pizza

Then we made our way to GOOSE ROCKS BEACH for a sunset picnic.  We had the whole beach to ourselves.  We dined on seafood with a bottle of red wine while Kiwie munched on dog food with a pint of water.  This was Kiwie’s first time at the beach.  She walked around the sand, tried a taste (and did not like it), and dipped her paws in the ocean.  She even found some goose tracks !  [TIP:  Bring a bedsheet to use as a picnic blanket]

We arrived in Portland in the early afternoon and checked into the
RESIDENCE INN BY MARRIOTT PORTLAND DOWNTOWN WATERFRONT.  This dog-friendly hotel is conveniently located in the historic Old Port district.  Our Studio King room had a kitchenette, dining area, and seating area.  Kiwie explored everywhere !

It was a rainy day so we decided to make an online reservation for a free tour at the SHIPYARD BREWING COMPANY, which is right next door to the hotel.  Kiwie did not join since dogs are not allowed.  The tour of the microbrewery was interesting and informative and afterwards, we went to the tasting room to sample some beer flights, including Seadog Sunfish Peach & Grapefruit, Smashed Blueberry, Monkey Fist IPA, Fireberry Tea Beer, XXXX IPA, Shipyard Mango Tea Beer, Watermelon Wheat Ale

Around 5PM, we picked-up Kiwie and headed over to EVENTIDE OYSTER CO but there was already a wait.  After putting our names on the waitlist, we walked over to BOONES FISH HOUSE & OYSTER ROOM to catch the $1.50 Oyster Happy Hour.  We sat at the bar on the outside deck.  The oysters were so good and briny !

On Eventide’s waitlist website, we could see in real-time that our table was almost ready, so we headed back to the restaurant.  Gotta love technology !  We were seated shortly after at an outside table

Eventide
We ordered Maine Oysters and Clams with cocktail sauce and kim chee ice, the famous Eventide Brown Butter Lobster Roll (so delicious !), and the New England Clam Bake which included steamers, mussels, lobster tail, potatoes, salt pork, and a hard boiled egg.  For dessert, we tried the Whoopie Pie

After breakfast, which was included at the hotel, we drove to the
PORTLAND HEAD LIGHT and FORT WILLIAMS PARK in Cape Elizabeth.  It was a beautiful sunny day and we walked along the cliffside loop
Lighthouse.jpg
There are scenic views all along the walk overlooking Casco Bay.  Gotta take the quintessential Maine lighthouse photo !Portland Head.jpg
Next stop was the ALLAGASH BREWING COMPANY.  We didn’t take the brewery tour but sat at the outdoor patio bar and sipped on our free tastings of the day’s 4 craft beer selections, including the House Beer, Saison golden brew, Little Brett, and Cuvee d’Industrial brew
Allagash.jpg
For lunch, we ordered 2 Lobster Rolls from the on-site BITE INTO MAINE food truck, the
Maine Style with light mayo and fresh chives (best of the trip !) and the Connecticut Style with hot butter

Then we made our way to J’S OYSTER for an afternoon “snack” which turned into a meal since everything on the menu sounded so good.  We sat outside overlooking the water and ordered Oysters, the Seafood Cocktail Combo,
a Bucket of Steamers, and a Lobster Roll

After strolling around the Old Port area, even though we were still pretty full, we decided to get dinner at PORTHOLE RESTAURANT since they had a really good
Twin Lobster Dinner Special.  We also ordered Mussels in white wine and garlic butter and of course, we had to try the Lobster Roll here too
Porthole
We sat on the outdoor deck which was really lively that day, with a DJ spinning music and people dancing.  It was almost a full moon and the moonrise was a sight to see !
